 Seaford
Community Partnership (SCP) was the first area partnership to
form in the Lewes District LSP, becoming established in October
2000. The SCP is made up of representatives from the local statutory,
voluntary and community and business
sector.
Vision
The SCP have drafted their 10 year strategic
plan, which aims work towards achieving their vision of enhancing
Seaford as a comfortable and interesting town for families to
live and work in, for people to visit, and to improve business
opportunities leading to better employment prospects. The plan
is at the public consultation stage and the SCP welcome your comments.

at the Library and Hurdis House.
Task Groups
 These
are made up of representatives from interested and relevant organisations
to develop a range of projects within the specific themes. The
six themes were identified as priorities for improvement by the
local community during a period of consultation in 2000. The task
groups meet regularly to discuss and take forward proposals, to
seek funding sources and to update on progress.

Youth:
Following the results of a questionnaire given to young people
(11-18 year olds) in 2003 the task force have been instrumental
in setting up and developing a number of initiatives for Seaford’s
youth.
• programme of activities for young people at the Downs
Leisure Centre on Friday and Saturday nights
• regular shopping and multiplex cinema trips to Eastbourne
• regular youth disco nights held at the Trek nightclub
• partnership with Town and District Councils, Lions Club
& skaters to fund the improvements to the Skate Park at the
Salts
 Future
projects:
• ‘Pop idol’ competition giving Seaford’s
young people the opportunity to show their talents – October
2005
• a pilot project to provide supervised youth provision
at the Salts recreation ground, turning the tractor shed into
a safe, usable youth facility – September 2005
Long term projects:
• development of a new purpose built youth facility
Seafront:
This group is involved in enhancing three distinct seafront areas,
the Martello fields, the Salts and the Promenade. The group aim
to make improvements that benefit residents and visitors without
spoiling its nature charm.
• The Heritage Trail: launched in 2004, the group sourced
funds to create a trail of display boards and maps to guide people
to sites of historical interest in the town.
• Maritime Festival: first held in Newhaven and Seaford
during Spring Bank Holiday weekend in 2003 to celebrate the RNLI
Society’s 200th Anniversary. A second festival was held
in 2005 and it is hoped this will continue to grow and become
an annual event in both towns.
 Future
projects:
• Sourcing funds for the improvement of the Martello Fields.
To include the creation of step access to link promenade to field,
improve unmade road and remove vehicular traffic, to plant hardy
scrubs and trees, to provide picnic benches and possible sheltered
areas.
• Installation of distance markers to encourage healthy
walking/running
• Improved signage to the town centre
Transport:
The task group established patterns of travel from home to school
and found that there was a need for safer routes to school as
well as safer routes for recreation. Proposals were presented
to ESCC transport department in 2002.
• Several new crossings of A259 have been installed
• Increase in cycle paths
• Safe routes to school
• Representation on Local Area Transport Strategy for Seaford.
 Future
projects:
• Development of an orbital integrated cycle/pedestrian
route around Seaford

• Improvements to the deteriorating art-deco Bishopstone
railway station.
Business, Education
& Training:
In partnership with Seaford
Head Community College Education Centre, Seaford
Chamber of Commerce, Eastbourne
and District Enterprise Agency and the Federation
of Small Businesses, funding was sourced from South
East England Development Agency (SEEDA) to run Passport to
Success, a Small Business Training Project.
• Project was successfully completed in 2004: Free training
was delivered to 93 employers and employees through flexible learning
modes and individual training programmes.
• Set of laptop computers for future outreach training projects
(held at Seaford Head Community College)
• In 2001/2002, SCP helped traders on Cradle Hill Industrial
Estate to form an association and brokered discussions with Lewes
District Council regarding areas of concern.
Future projects:
• Funding has been received for ‘Returners to Work’
training, this is currently in progress – Autumn 2005
• Continued and improved communication (and brokerage as
necessary) with traders on Cradle Hill Industrial Estate.
Waste Forum:

This group began meeting specifically to find and promote environmentally
friendly ways of dealing with waste. They are looking at measures
for local improvements to the LDC plans for recycling of waste.
• In 2003, Newhaven and Seaford Town Councils both adopted
the Zero Waste Charter. This means looking at waste as a resource;
it means designing products to be re-used or recycled; it means
reducing waste and increasing recycling. Zero Waste ensures that
products are made to be reused, repaired or recycled back into
nature or the marketplace.
Other Projects:
• Cinema Club: these popular monthly screenings held at
Downs Leisure Centre
since 2004 give residents the opportunity to see recent releases
in their home town.
• Seaford
Forum: organised bi-monthly by Seaford Volunteers Association
at St James’ Clubhouse. Talks and discussions on topics
of community interest – open to all to attend.
• Farmers Market: Pilot scheme set up monthly markets from
June – September 2002, these proved popular and a further
run of markets were planned from October 2002 – Autumn 2004.
Unfortunately, the public response and bad weather have led to
the markets being discontinued.
